Embracing the Uncharted: My Unexpected Journey in Tech Marketing


20 years ago, my marketing journey began with unclear expectations but a fierce determination for success. As a young  Black Haitian woman, I diverged from the expected path of medicine, aiming to make my mark in the corporate world.

 

My vision of chic pantsuits in a bustling Chicago ad agency didn’t materialize. Instead, I found myself immersed in the realm of tech marketing. Yet, this unexpected path has reshaped my understanding of success, corporate navigation, and the harsh reality that hard work alone doesn't guarantee advancement.

 

I found myself in places where the foundation of who I was would be challenged. I’m too quiet, I’m too loud.  My tone wasn’t strong enough. My tone was too assertive. I was told to be authentic, but often, my authenticity was too much. Constantly twisting myself into a pretzel to conform to whatever the person in the room wanted to hear or see.

Although my mindset and journey have evolved, who I am at my core has remained constant. Compassionate, humble, a thought-leader, full of humility, a creative and strategic observer, only speaking up when I have an idea that will move the conversation forward.

Just like I was twisting myself to succeed in corporate, corporations find themselves twisting and reshaping marketing strategies to fulfill the latest trends, but often missing the mark on the fundamentals of marketing.

 

While the marketing landscape has evolved, fundamental principles endure. Digital transformation has altered how consumers consume information and how we reach consumers, but the essence of marketing remains. Many organizations chase fleeting trends, neglecting these core principles and falling into an endless loop of catching up. 

 

In my upcoming series, 'Back to Basics' marketing, I'll spotlight foundational marketing principles and show how they’re still essential for your marketing strategy.  I’ll also share how these foundational principles can be integrated successfully into current marketing trends.
